are really looking forward to giving people another chance to find out
more about their local history.” says Hannah Griffiths from Newport
Minster.
Once again, the whole town is getting involved with shop owners
discovering the history of their shops and creating window displays to
reflect their findings. 64 High Street will be open with an exhibition on the
history of Island Steam railways and Independent Arts will be hosting a
Classic Games exhibition with chance for a game of chess. The
Museum of Island History will be open for free. On Newport Quay the
Classic Motor Show will have hundreds of classic vehicles on show.
Newport Minster will have guided tours, family talks and activities. An
exhibition in partnership with Brave Island on Birth, Marriage and Death
will be showcased. Time Jump Histories will take us back to the trenches
and Quarr Abbey with be exhibiting their bookbinding work. The IWC
Archaeology team will be displaying some items significant to Newport’s
History. Unity Hall, the Newport and Carisbrooke Heritage Society and
the Commonwealth War Graves Commission will be available within the
Minster to help discover your own historical connections.
“Come and learn about the history of Birth, Marriage and Death and the
role of the Minster in these important life milestones. Hear the stories of
local peoples experiences and see their lovely photos.” – Jodie Witton,
Brave Island Exhibition Coordinator Placement.
